Wave Expeditions is the top white water rafting company in the country with various “green” certifications and numerous awards and quality certifications. Unlike many competitors, Wave Expeditions is meticulous in the selection of their guides and equipment maintenance and has an excellent safety record. They offer a broad array of activities and rafting excursions. However, the best that we’ve found for a diverse group is the half-day Class II/III Balsa River tour.

The tour begins at 10:30 am, however you need to be at the Wave office downtown 15 minutes ahead of time. There is a 40 minute bus ride to get to the river with a quick stop along the way. After you finish on the water, it’s back into the bus for a short drive to a local farm for a late lunch. You return to the Wave office around 5 pm.

Strapped sandals or closed shoes only, no flip flops. Take hats, sunscreen, repellent, bathing suit, towel. Wear quick dry fabrics such as nylon if possible in white water rafting.

– $67.50 per person and $60.75 for kids age 8-12, includes 10% discount

For people with rafting experience, there is the full day Class III/IV tour. You need to be at the Wave office by 8:15 am. Wave Expeditions has 2 identical Class III/IV runs on 2 different rivers, the Sarapiqui river and the Toro river. Each are identical runs and only 15 minutes apart . They determine which river they use each morning depending on the most optimal water levels guaranteeing that you will have the most optimal river experience.

$85.50 per person over 12 years old, includes 10% discount.

– Office located downtown across from back of Catholic Church

Canyoning and Rafting Combo: We very rarely recommend combo tours because you usually end up with lesser versions of each of the tours rather than having a really great, ‘wow’ experience. The exception is the Canyoning and Rafting Combo. This is a great option for groups who are short on time and want to fill their days. The tour starts at 7:30 am with the rappelling. After the tour, you will have a quick breakfast en route to the Wave office before starting your rafting adventure. Once you finish on the water, it’s back into the bus for a short drive to a local farm to change into dry clothes, enjoy some cultural fun and have a late lunch. You return to the Wave office around 4 pm.

Take hats, sunscreen, repellent, bathing suit, towel and a dry change of clothes including footwear. Wear quick dry fabrics such as nylon if possible. Strapped sandals or closed shoes only, no flip flops in white water rafting.

Includes transportation, towel, breakfast, snack and lunch.
